In the Drawing Room

Hi, my name is Lisa Miller, and one of my recently discovered passions is drawing portraits. Over the last two years I've had the opportunity to draw portraits for some wonderful people, and I look forward to drawing many more!

Busy summer!

It's hard to believe that the summer has gone by so quickly! The heat has been amazing, and yet, this is the first summer that I've ever seen hummingbirds in our camp site.....and in the trees! My brother and I have taken dozens of shots of them this summer, and come winter, when things are cold, and there aren't any little hummingbirds around to look at, I'll sit back and try my hand at drawing them.

The big news for me is that a venue offered to host my painting at ArtPrize this year! I'm absolutely THRILLED about it! If you haven't heard of ArtPrize, it's an open art contest, and attracts people from all over the world. It opens on Sept.22 in Grand Rapids, MI and will have hundreds of artists from all over the world entered in it. Here's a link to the ArtPrize site:

The excitement builds!! In just a week or so, I'll take my entry over and install it at Baker Tent Rental & Alternatives in Motion, and will stand there in awe. And of course....I'll take pictures. I always take pictures. ;-)

Pencils and paper

A little over two years ago, if someone had told me that I could draw portraits, I would have laughed. I'd never drawn a thing in my life, let alone tried to draw a face. But, here I am, doing just that! A simple pencil and a piece of Bristol paper can fascinate me for hours.
In the short amount of time that I've been been drawing, one of the things that I have come to love is drawing babies! This baby's name is Sarah, and she lives in Brazil. There is a special joy that comes with a baby's smile, and Sarah seems to exude that joy!

The portraits that I draw are done using photographs as a reference. There aren't any sittings, and most of the work is done right in the quiet of my own room. . . . But when I'm drawing, there comes a point in the portrait when it seems as if I can hear the person I'm drawing. Sarah laughed! And it's no surprise with that big smile on her face!

I'll be posting more portraits in the days ahead, but if you'd like to see more of them now, you can click on the slideshow to the right, and it will open an album that you can view.

Thanks for stopping in!
